Match Report
Blackpool Stanley ended up winners of what started as a close contest by gradually grinding down their opposition. Stanley started with a number of debutants and players starting only their second game of rugby league. The opening exchanges were fairly even with the Wigan side holding their own and looking the more organised and most likely to win the game. However, the introduction of super sub Ajay Lord on the 12 minute mark saw a change in the balance of the game. With Stanley defending their own quarter a spilt ball by the Cuthberts attack saw Ajay pounce and run 60 metres out stripping the Wigan defence and score under the posts for a converted try 6 – 0. Not long after Stanley struck again to take a 12 – 0 lead. Hindley stolethe ball from a Cuthberts attacker, made some hard yards and managed to off load to the supporting Jacob Brindle who side stepped the last defender to score close to the posts. Lord converted. The Wigan side were far from beaten even though Stanley had the ascendancy and managed two unconverted tries before the half time whistle. Half time score 12 – 8 to Stanley.
Stanley dominated the second half scoring six further tries, 3 for Feargus Anderson, 2 more for Lord and a try for the hard working Liam Harrison. Lord kick 4 second half goals. St Cuthberts replied with one converted try to make the final score 44 – 14 in Stanley’s favour. The win represented a good all round performance for with Stanley newcomers Jacob Brindle, Connor Rathery, Danny Walderman and Matt Stelfox all showing encouraging signs for the future. Whilst the hard working Liam Harrison and Jack Jones in the pack helped Stanley lay the platform for their second half dominance. Solid performances in the backs from Harding and Winter meant Stanley were able to apply telling pressure when needed.
